The Future of Renewable Energy in India: Beyond 2030
India’s renewable energy journey has been remarkable. From less than 5 GW of solar capacity in 2014 to over 100 GW today, we have proven that ambitious targets can be achieved with the right policy framework.
But 2030 is just the beginning. To truly become a green economy, we need to think about 2050 and beyond. This means moving from renewable electricity to renewable everything — green steel, green hydrogen, green ammonia, green shipping.
The challenge is enormous. Our coal-dependent power sector accounts for 70% of electricity generation. Heavy industries — cement, steel, chemicals — are deeply integrated with fossil fuels. Transportation, despite EV growth, remains overwhelmingly petroleum-based.
The solution lies in three areas: massive R&D investment, financial innovation for green projects, and international cooperation on technology transfer.
