Building livable cities for India's urbanizing population

By 2030, India’s urban population will reach 600 million. How we build and manage these cities will determine our quality of life, environmental footprint, and economic competitiveness.

The Smart Cities Mission has provided learnings — both good and bad. We’ve seen that technology alone doesn’t make cities smart; governance, citizen engagement, and inclusive design do.

Mobility, housing, water, and waste are the four critical challenges. Mass transit must be prioritized over private vehicles. Affordable housing must be embedded in city plans, not pushed to the outskirts.

Green spaces, walkability, and pedestrian-friendly streets must become non-negotiable. Cities like Pondicherry, Indore, and Chandigarh show that thoughtful urban design improves life quality dramatically.
