Sustainable Agriculture for Food Security: A Roadmap
India will be home to 1.6 billion people by 2050. Feeding them sustainably is one of our greatest challenges. Conventional approaches — chemical fertilizers, intensive irrigation, monoculture — have given us food security but at great cost to soil, water, and biodiversity.
The alternative is regenerative agriculture: practices that build soil health, conserve water, and support biodiversity while maintaining yields. Crop diversification, organic inputs, agroforestry, and precision farming all play crucial roles.
Technology is a game-changer. Soil sensors, satellite imagery, AI-powered advisory services, and drone-based spraying can help small farmers optimize inputs. But access remains uneven — we must ensure these benefits reach the bottom 40%.
Policy support is essential: minimum support prices for diverse crops, not just rice and wheat; investment in cold chains and food processing; and crop insurance that incentivizes sustainable practices.
