Defense Modernization: Strategic Imperatives for India

India faces a complex security environment: a two-front threat from China and Pakistan, terrorism, hybrid warfare, and emerging technology-driven conflicts. Our defense modernization must address all dimensions.

The priorities are clear: indigenous capability through Atmanirbhar Bharat in defense, theaterization for joint warfare, modernization of cyber and space capabilities, and strategic deterrence enhancement.

The Defense Acquisition Procedure 2020 has streamlined procurement. iDEX program is fostering startup innovation. Defense exports have crossed Rs 20,000 crore. These are positive signs.

Yet, much remains. Our defense R&D needs major boost — DRDO must focus on cutting-edge technologies while encouraging private sector. Force structure needs rationalization for the digital battlefield. Most importantly, we must invest in human capital — soldiers, sailors, airmen who can operate sophisticated systems while maintaining the courage and discipline that define our forces.
