Exclusive: Athlete on India’s Sports Future
The world-class athlete shares her journey and what India needs to become a sports powerhouse.
“India’s sports ecosystem has transformed,” she observed. “From sporadic individual successes, we are building systematic infrastructure. TOPS scheme has been a game-changer. Khelo India is identifying talent at school level.”
Q: What was your biggest challenge?
“Self-belief. Coming from a small town, dreaming of Olympic glory seemed impossible. The support system around me — coaches, family, federation — gave me the confidence to dream and the resources to achieve.”
Q: What do young athletes need most?
“Quality coaching from young age. Nutrition. Sports science. Mental conditioning. And exposure to international competition early. The gap between Indian and global athletes is closing, but consistency requires systematic support.”
Q: Your message to young Indians?
“Don’t choose between studies and sports — pursue both. Sports teaches discipline, resilience, teamwork — qualities valuable in any career. And if you have the passion and ability, India now has the system to support your dreams.”
